RESEARCHERS

Our research station lies at the narrowest point of all the Americas and in the heart of one of the highest concentrations of species on the planet. Here the Panamanian isthmus joins two great continents, forming a unique geographical bottleneck where all wild life moving between North and South America must pass.

Located in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor— just 17 kilometres from the Caribbean Sea and 32 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean— where the significant elevational gradient of the continental ridge quickly gives way to lush riparian forests and primary cloud forests filled with vines and epiphytes. The crystal waters of the Río Mamoní flow through a mosaic of ecosystems ranging from virgin rainforests to the anthropogenic grasslands and lowland secondary forests found in the lower elevations of the Mamoní Valley Preserve.

LODGING AND FOOD

Nestled amidst the forest are open-air, raised cabanas where researchers can comfortably sleep while also being right next to their research sites. Facilities are sustainably powered 24/7 by a unique hydro-electric system where cabanas and their hand-crafted furnishings are built with locally-salvaged hardwoods. More info here.
